Thermal Styling
Let’s talk about thermal styling — Curling iron and flat iron.
I’m sure I wouldn’t go too far on a limb by saying that most of us touch our hair with some kind of heated styling tool on a fairly regular basis.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
This one is, in my opinion, one of the most important rule. Make sure your hair is COMPLETELY DRY before applying a curling or flat iron to it.
A few months ago one of my client, who had just returned from Australia, told me about a stylist who had flat ironed her while it was still wet. She continued to say that it took no time to make her hair beautiful and shiny. I thought, great I have to check this out!
Sure enough, after doing some research online and diverse pro hair/make up forums, and even after ordering from Sephora a “wet/dry” flat iron for the mere cost of 200.00 to try it, I came up with this conclusion:
Again another hyped product that does not work. Think about it, you cannot remove the moisture trapped inside the cuticles of your hair and close them at the same time… The final results won’t be pretty. You will end up either with hair that reverts to its original state, because of the moisture stuck inside, or your cuticles will remain wide open, therefore, creating a frizzy lackluster head of hair — Not exactly what I had in mind.
Remember… Hair is at its weakest when wet. Heat can and will, over a period of time, cause damage to your hair cuticles.
Basically you cannot, with hair anyway, do 2 things at once. Just like the 2 in one shampoo/conditioner that do not work, wet/dry flat iron are far from ideal in terms of styling and furthermore bad for your hair. After using the wet/dry iron, my hair looked dull, fried and it took me far longer to finish styling it than if I had begun with dry hair!
Save your money and invest in a good flat iron and, please, dry your hair beforehand.
The BaByliss pro nano titanium is my favorite flat iron to date. This iron gets my hair pin straight on the lower setting. I have thick wavy hair and always have to use the highest temp — No more! My hair has so much shine and I don’t even need to use any products except a thermal spray to protect my hair. LOVE IT!
