Product Review and Photos: MAC Haute & Naughty Mascara
Tuesday August 17, 2010
I’m a huge fan of so many things within the brand, but MAC mascaras have never done anything for me. When Haute & Naughty came out I wasn’t going to be bothered. Nah. Curiosity eventually got the best of me, when the buzz in the blosphere about its greatness became impossible to ignore. REALLY? It’s that good? Has MAC finally made a turn around with its mascara??? Three clicks later it was mine.
Here’s how it works. Haute & Naughty ($18) gives you the options to apply your mascara in 2 different ways, it’s like two application options in one tube. Unscrew it from the glittery purple cap, and you’ll reveal a fully saturated brush, enough to get fat lashes with just one coat. Unscrew from the pink cap, and the brush comes out with a lot less product resulting in more precise application with more define lashes. Basically, when the brush is pulled out, it goes through a narrow tube, wiping off most of the excess product. The brushes are identical it’s just the amount of product on the brush that differs.
Pink cap: Define and separate nicely. Curls a bit too.

Purple cap: Noticeably thickens lashes and give them lengths. Watch out for the clumping.
The formula left my lashes soft to the touch. When I applied with the pink side I got some serious definition, the length was good too. When I used the purple side, my lashes got clumpy. I should add that I apply my mascara fast, which isn’t recommended with Haute & Naughty, especially when using the purple side. Go slow or else it’ll be be a mess.
While the concept is pretty ingenious and works for a lot of people, Haute & Naughty is not cutting it for me. The mascara formulation is average and for $18 a pop I do not want any clumping no matter how fast I apply. Additionally, the brush feels really cheap, flimsy, as though it could easily break. Also something else worth noting, the mascara has a scent… THAT is not something I dig in a mascara. EVER.
So there you have it. Have you tried Haute & Naughty?
It’s been one week on the dot since we’ve returned from our French vacation. I’ve dealt with Mr. jet lag pretty well, hardly feeling. YAY. My first day back at the studio was insane, packed to the max, with my lovely local clients who had been patiently waiting for my return. THANKS FOR THE LOVE! After taking care of everyone’s locks I came home and went straight to bed.
Then the weekend hit and, hello wedding world. I had a blast meeting all our brides, playing with my makeup brushes my new hairspray. Oh I love my job.
Studio Marie-Pierre Rating: C+

I have to say, I was on a 20-year trek to find the perfect mascara. At one time or another I had found the perfect mascara (one that lengthens, separates, keeps a curl, and waterproof), then the formula would change, or the product was no longer available (is this some sort of cruel joke?!).
When I won the mascara sampler from one of your questionnaires, I had yet another opportunity to try out some of Sephora’s favorite picks. Still no real winners.
Since I go with a heavy eyeliner, and occasionally play with false eyelashes, I don’t really make it a priority to find THE mascara any more…
